Researchers have tricked everyday readers into believing that AI is as smart as a philosopher.

Says Eric Schwitzgebel, one of the researchers: “We might be approaching a future in which machine outputs are sufficiently humanlike that ordinary people start to attribute real sentience to machines.”

The research team pulled-off the stunt by having AI writer GPT-3 ingest the works of philosopher Daniel Dennet – and then answer philosophical questions posed to it.

The result: The answers from GPT-3 sounded so authentic, even experts in philosophy often could not distinguish computer-generated responses from Dennet’s own responses.
