AI Decides: Is Prince The Coolest Artist?

IBM grabbed a chance to demonstrate its auto-debate analysis tool – Key Point Analysis — during the Grammys.

As music artists trekked to the stage to claim their awards, some fans engaged in playful debates on the Web, keypunching in their takes on debatable assertions like “Prince is the most groundbreaking artist of all time.”

The publicity stunt — designed to drive home the merits of IBM’s AI tool – enabled the company to analyze the fans’ responses, including:

*Identifying the heart of each argument

*Evaluating the quality of each argument

*Stitching together a ‘single, clear narrative’ reflecting the collective ‘wisdom of the crowd’ on both sides of the debate

All told, the event was a success in showcasing Key Point Analysis as a solution for companies and organizations looking to auto-generate written analysis of pro and con arguments on any topic.

The two companies have announced a new partnership, which will enable data visualizations generated by USEReady database software to be explained on screen in plain English – courtesy of Arria’s technology.

During the past few years, Arria and a number of other pioneering AI-generated writing firms have been working diligently to integrate their tech into commonly used business intelligence software programs.

Essentially, the integration enables companies to auto-generate plain English reports and analysis from their databases.

Currently, programs like Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Power BI, Microstrategy, Qlik, Spotfire and Tableau can all be enhanced with AI-generated writing plugins from Arria and similar firms.

*Upgrading Your BI Software With AI-Generated Writing: Automated Insights, a pioneer of AI-generated writing, has released a checklist for companies considering adding the tech to their database mix.

Andy Brown, marketing coordinator for Automated Insights, suggests your firm may be ready for plain English descriptions of data visualizations if:

*You’re seeing different interpretations of facts portrayed by data visualizations

*You’re spending more time with your business intelligence dashboard than with your family

*You’re spending too much time creating written business reports by hand

Observes Brown: “Despite what you might think, company data visualizations leave a lot of room for interpretation.

*Gartner: Thumbs-Up on Reports Generated by AI Writing: Market consulting firm Gartner indicates the smart money in business intelligence software is on reports that include plain English explanations of data visualizations generated by those programs.

Says Rita Sallam, a Gartner analyst: “Five, six or seven years ago, interactive visualization was the main differentiating feature — along with data preparation.”

These days, Sallam adds, more competitive business intelligence software adds AI-generated writing “as a way to facilitate easier ad-hoc analysis” and automated insights from business data.

*Cheetah Now Integrates with AI-Generated Writing Tool: Users of the Cheetah digital marketing/customer engagement platform now have a tool they can use for the creation of automated marketing copy: the integration of Phrasee AI-generated writing into its platform.

Phrasee AI has been used by marketers for a number of years now to auto-generate subject heads for marketing emails, ad slogans and similar short advertising copy.

Says Jasper Pye, VP product, Phrasee: “With Phrasee generating optimized language using AI — and Cheetah Digital using machine learning and first-party data to create segments and journeys — we are both pushing performance across our customers’ communications whilst creating efficiencies in process along the way.”

*GPT-3: Still With the Potty Mouth?: Amidst the many virtues of GPT-3 and its kin is the stubborn fact that its output can – on occasion – still make a nun blush.

Observes James Kobielus, a writer for Infoworld: “Even when NLG (natural language generation) tools are used with the best intentions, their relentless productivity can overwhelm a human author’s ability to thoroughly review every last detail that gets published under their name.

“Consequently, the author-of-record on an NLG-generated text may not realize if they are publishing distorted, false, offensive, or defamatory material.

The solution, Kobielus indicates, may come from a forthcoming GPT-3 competitor — dubbed GPT3-Neo — whose developers are working to eliminate the GPT-3 potty mouth problem.

*Researcher: Subtle Thought Still Eludes GPT-3: Despite the well-documented prowess of GPT-3 and similar programs, don’t hold your breath for truly intelligent thinking to emerge from such AI.

So says Michelle Zho, the computer scientist who invented ‘Personality Insights’ – driven by IBM’s Watson technology.

Says Zho: “Yes, large scale language model will help AI become smarter in certain tasks — what we call the social and chit-chat tasks.

“But when it really comes to the task that requires fine-grained knowledge, it’s not going to work — at least, not at the (current) state of the technology.”

*AI and Finnish News Media: An Analysis: Henrik Rydenfelt, a philosopher and adjunct professor at the University of Helsinki, offers his take on how AI is changing Finnish Media in this paper.

Observes Rydenfelt: “The introduction of automation in newsrooms provides an opportunity to explore how the agency and responsibility of machines are articulated and understood in a context where machines act in roles that previously were reserved for human agents — potentially challenging received conceptions and practices.”

Rydenfelt adds: “Even if machines and algorithms appear to act in roles previously reserved for human beings, they do not participate in the decision-making processes of the newsroom.

“Accordingly, praise and blame for successes and failures belong squarely to the human being.”
