Online newsletter service Mailchimp now offers free AI editing of content created on its service.
Dubbed ‘Content Optimizer,’ the new tool uses machine learning models and business rules to offer suggestions on how to improve content, layout, and imagery, according to Ben Dickson, a writer for TechTalks.
Says John Wolf, product manager, smart content, Mailchimp: “Our customers spend 28 million hours a year writing copy alone — not even designing and sourcing images.
“We think with some technologies in the generative space, we can decrease that by 80%.”

AP relies heavily on Data Skrive’s automation to churn-out preview stories on upcoming sporting events, according to Barry Bedlan, global director, text and new markets, Associated Press.
A key demographic the company is targeting with those previews: Gamblers.
Says Bedlan: “Because of sports betting, the expectation is that not only will we have recaps and photos from every major sporting event — but we’ll have some sort of a preview laying out what is at stake.”
Data Skrive helped AP crank-out about 10,000 sports preview stories last year, according to Bedlan.

*Yet Another GPT-3 Killer is Released: Microsoft and nVidia have released a supercomputer-driven AI auto text writer, which they say dusts GPT-3 — currently the gold standard for automated writing.

Observes Paresh Khary, a group program manager at Microsoft: “The quality and results that we have obtained today are a big step forward in the journey towards unlocking the full promise of AI in natural language.”
Besides partnering with nVidia on AI writing, Microsoft is also a partner with OpenAI — the company that developed GPT-3.
*A Group of Journalists Put AI Writing Through Its Paces: A team of South African journalists that tested AI writing says the results were impressive — but non-threatening.
Observes Jay Caboz, a writer for Business Insider for SA and one of the journalists who tested the software: “While some of the copy can err on the side of generic, it’s worth spending a couple of days trying it out for yourself to see if it will work for you.
“The results took a lot more work than we thought.
“But in the end, we got something that was workable — although it lacked a bit of life.”
One caveat: Caboz et al tested AI writing program Jarvis, which uses predictive analytics to auto-generate copy.
The team did not take a look at more disciplined auto-writing programs, which are designed to drill down into databases and populate pre-configured story templates with the data found there.
These more disciplined AI writers are made by companies like AX Semantics, Automated Insights and Arria NLG.
